A Brief Discussion on the Charging Process of Vacuum Induction Melting Furnaces

Charging process for vacuum induction melting furnace:
Charging:
(1) Basic materials such as Fe, NiW, MoCo, V, and C can be directly charged into the crucible;
(2) The temperature inside the crucible is uneven, higher at the bottom and lower at the top. Refractory metals and elements with larger quantities should be placed in the high-temperature zone.
(3) Place small pieces of material at the bottom of the crucible to quickly form a molten pool. Place larger pieces in the upper part of the crucible to facilitate preheating and smooth collapse;
(4) The material should be loosely packed at the top and tightly packed at the bottom to prevent bridging during melting due to jamming or welding of the upper material;
(5) When charging, tilt the crucible slightly forward. Avoid spreading the upper material evenly; concentrate it towards the tapping side:
(6) Under hot furnace conditions, charging should be quick to prevent water droplets from condensing on the water-cooled surface of the induction coil, increasing crucible gas absorption, prolonging the evacuation time, lowering the temperature, and affecting the crucible life.
Melting:
The main tasks during the melting period are: melting the charge, degassing, removing low-melting-point harmful impurities and non-metallic inclusions, ensuring the molten metal temperature and vacuum degree in the melting pool meet the requirements, creating conditions for refining. The melting period takes a long time in the entire smelting process.
Spattering during melting:
Excessive melting speed, large cold pieces falling into the molten pool, too fast addition of material, excessive gas content, and excessively high molten metal temperature can all cause significant spattering of the molten metal during the melting period. The spattered molten metal mostly adheres to the upper part of the crucible wall, forming a ring-shaped shell. This not only causes significant material loss but can also severely hinder the smelting process. If spattering occurs, the melting speed (reduce input power) can be reduced or the melting chamber pressure can be appropriately increased.
